Low-side power switches are used to turn electrical loads ON and OFF by switching the GND (low-) side of the load supply.
MOSFET low-side switches allow more control for applications that use high-speed pulse-width modulations (PWM). Smart low-side switches are MOSFETs with additional integrated circuitry that allows the switch to protect itself and diagnose possible unintended system behavior.
Infineon’s HITFET™ intelligent low-side power switches are especially designed for automotive and industrial applications and stand for “Highly Integrated Temperature protected FET.” The built-in intelligence and protective features of smart low-side power switches offer significant cost and PCB reduction, shorter time to market, and improved performance & reliability compared to conventional, discrete solutions. All HITFET™ smart low-side switch families offer protection against overload, overvoltage, short-circuit, excessive temperature, and Electrostatic Discharge (ESD).
Infineon has a variety of families to meet requirements in power switching for low-side applications:
HITFET™ + 12V is Infineon’s latest generation of protected intelligent switches for automotive and industrial applications. The novel technology results in significant reduction in package size (of up to 50 percent) compared to the existing Classic HITFET™ 12V portfolio. HITFET™ + 12V devices provide design flexibility due to their package concept and feature options. The family consists of standard and fully featured low-side switches scaling from 11 mΩ to 125 mΩ in two different packages: PG-TO-252 and PG-TDSO-8. These devices are able to switch resistive, inductive, and capacitive loads.
HITFET™ + 24V family is targeting higher voltage supply systems in transportation and industrial systems. The smart low-side switch comes in a PG-TDSO-8 package, which is up to five times smaller than the market standard, thus paving the way for cost and PCB-space savings. A status pin enables the microcontroller to detect and diagnose failures faster. HITFET™ + 24V is capable of driving PWM signals of up to 20 kHz. The 24 V family is an ideal switch for braking, transmission, and compressor systems in 24 V CAV vehicles.
Classic HITFET™ 12V is the established low-side switches family for automotive and industrial applications. Thanks to their proven technology, the reliable devices are the right solution for applications that require high robustness and energy capability. The family consists of single and dual channel switches from 10 mΩ to 800 mΩ in three different packages: PG-TO252, PG-SOT223, and PG-DSO-8.
Classic HITFET™ 24V is the proven family for a harsh environment in automotive and industrial applications as well as for construction & agricultural vehicles (CAV). The scalable single and dual channel devices are available from 18 mΩ to 550 mΩ in PG-TO252, PG-SOT223, and PG-DSO-8 packages.
TEMPFET™ are temperature protected low-side switches and provide a basic level of protection via their integrated temperature sensor. The sensor is available on external pins to enable fast switching and flexible temperature response control. The family, which has been established in the market for almost 30 years, offers products from 6.5 mΩ to 18 mΩ in PG-TO220 and PG-TO263 packages suitable for fast switching applications. The whole portfolio is qualified and optimized for 24 V automotive and industrial applications.
Low-side switches are used in a wide variety of applications. Infineon’s HITFET™ portfolio of intelligent low-side power switches, is automotive qualified. The devices are suitable for passenger and CAV applications like suspension control, transmission, braking, and compressor systems, motor control modules, and LED lighting control.
