Sensing the world in 3D with REAL3™ 3D image sensor

REAL3™ is Infineon’s 3D imager family consisting of highly integrated time-of-flight (ToF) sensors. These single-chip imagers are sunlight-robust, highly scalable and ready for integration into a wide range of consumer, automotive and industrial applications.

Infineon’s REAL3™ time-of-flight image sensors enable electronic devices to acquire a real 3D map of the scene in front of the device. The surroundings, objects and people are transformed into the digital space in real time. Algorithms use that data to measure distances and sizes, to track motions and to convert the shape of objects into 3D models. Our products are designed to be integrated into the smallest 3D ToF camera modules, accurately measuring depth in the short and longer range at the lowest power consumption.

Infineon’s REAL3™ image sensor family opens up a completely new world of exciting applications for devices deployed in consumer and industrialmarkets, while also setting new performance and security benchmarks for existing use cases.

The REAL3™ image sensors are based on Infineon ToF (Time-of-Flight), which is the most advanced vision sensing technology in the world today and is already powering the smallest depth-sensing 3D camera modules on the market.

Infineon’s REAL3™ 3D image sensor delivers depth data in real time with a capture speed in the order of milliseconds; it is contact-less, fast and robust to ambient lightning conditions. Thanks to its patented technology for suppression of background illumination (SBI), REAL3™ supports camera deployments under all ambient light conditions. REAL3™ time-of-flight image sensors allow electronic devices to build a 3-dimensional map of the scene in front of the electronic gadget – whether that be a room, a moving or static object or a person – and translate that map to the digital world in real time. Advanced algorithms use that data to measure distance and size and to track motion and movements.

In addition, the single-chip REAL3™ imager brings a third dimension to biometric identification, to 3D scanning and to hand gesture and body tracking. Outstanding performance in 3D computational photography and augmented reality applications revolutionize the user experience.

REAL3™ ToF sensors in cars bring added comfort and safety to automotive applications

Our REAL3™ automotive imager based on 3D time-of-flight (ToF) technology brings the most accurate and robust depth sensing capabilities to a wide range of automotive use cases both within and beyond the vehicle. As cars evolve to support a greater degree of automated driving and more intuitive ways for the driver and passengers to interact with the vehicle (HMI), designers are increasingly focusing on freedom, flexibility, comfort and – most importantly – safety. Our REAL3™ 3D in-cabin sensing cameras capture and process the data needed to ensure a high standard of passive safety through use cases like occupant detection and smart airbag systems. They also support exterior sensing functions such as secure navigation and collision avoidance. In addition, comfort features such as gesture control and fully autonomous parking pave the way for maximum driver convenience. Here, high-resolution ToF cameras use 3D sensing to scan the area round the car down to the ground to detect curbs, walls or other obstacles – regardless of how bright or dark it is.
